Rethinking Human Rights

We all know there are nations that are terribly cruel violators of sacred human rights. However, on this International Human Rights Day, we will not be delving into those because we already know about them. Instead, on this seventy-third anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), we will spend time analyzing situations in which some of the rights spelled out in this document are pitted against others, and we’ll be voting on how best to deal with such situations. We will question what governments, organizations, and individuals we should oppose and which ones deserve our solidarity. We may or may not always agree with the organizations we believe in; what’s important is that we deepen our awareness of realities faced when people make life-determining decisions far away from the comforts we have in making ours.

Speaker:

Carolfrances Likins is an ICUJP board member and the chair of its outreach and advocacy committee. She is a retired elementary school teacher with three decades experience, mostly in Compton and Watts. She’s also a screenwriter, novelist, children’s book author, and poet. She has traveled nine times to Cuba, six to Nicaragua, twice each to Palestine, Guatemala, and El Salvador, and once each to Venezuela and México – always as an internationalist, not a tourist. For the seventieth anniversary of the UDHR, she developed an interactive cooperative game exploring the document, through which she led the ICUJP and one university class.
